MICRODERMABRASION

What is it?

Microdermabrasion is a type of exfoliation performed during a facial.  Exfoliation removes dead cells from the skin, helping to encourage cell turnover and give skin a "fresher" look.

How does it work?

The microdermabrasion machine uses a powerful electronic vacuum to spray corundum crystals across the skin's surface through a pressurized wand.  The speed of the crystal flow causes an abrasive action that gently removes the surface layers of the skin, allowing smoother, fresher skin to emerge, and allowing for better absorption of products.

The vacuum action stimulates circulation, increasing the blood supply, which provides nutrients needed for skin regeneration.  The cells responsible for collagen and elastin synthesis are also stimulated.

What results can I Expect?

Microdermabrasion helps to improve skin tone, texture, elasticity and colour, refine enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of age/sun spots.

Clients can generally see some improvement in skin texture with the first treatment; however, a series of treatments provides optimal skin rejuvenation benefits.  One treatment per month is recommended to prevent aging, or to maintain results after a series of treatments.

*Clients should keep in mind that results are SLOW AND PROGRESSIVE.*

Microdermabrasion is NOT for:

-skin with open or raised lesions, including cold sores

-eczema or psoriasis

-inflammatory acne

-diabetics (insulin dependent)

-people who are HIV positive

-rosacea

-those taking prescription drugs such as anti-coagulants, Accutane, thryroid meds, meds that cause photo-sensitivity (must be off for min. 6 mos.)

-those taking Retinol-A or AHAs (must discontinue use min. one week prior to microdermabrasion and may resume 3 weeks after treatment)

-those who will be exposed to strong sunlight or wind (e.g. sailing, skiing, sun bathing)

-those who have recently had laser treatments or chemical peels, or on areas that have recently been waxed.

What is Involved in a Microdermabrasion Treatment?

First, you will be given a form to carefully read and sign.  You will also be given a facial consult form.  This is a great time to ask questions, discuss your goals for the treatment and discuss any concerns you may have.

You will be asked to remove earrings, necklaces, nose rings, glasses and contact lenses.

You will then get comfortable on the facial bed and have your skin examined, cleansed and dried.  The microdermabrasion wand will be passed over your skin, crystals removed, skin examined, passes made to specific areas of focus, crystals removed, skin examined, and possibly a third pass made over the  skin, crystals removed, and skin examined.

A soothing serum and mask will be applied and you will be treated to a lovely hand massage.  The mask is then removed and appropriate moisturizers massaged into the skin.

You should be relaxed and experience virtually no discomfort or recovery.  You may have some redness immediatley after the procedure and/or tightness or the feeling of mild sunburn for a few days.  Please ensure that you keep the skin hydrated over the next few days by drinking plenty of water, and applying extra moisturizer as needed.  Also, avoid the sun where possible and USE SUNSCREEN (SPF 15-35).
